About
John

Thinking about money, meaning, and why some things last.

John Soriano

Everyone in marketing is moving faster. More AI, more channels, more output, more dashboards proving it's working. I've become more interested in the opposite question: what actually matters, and why?

At PayMongo, I lead marketing for a fintech trying to build real financial infrastructure for Filipino businesses — the kind that handles payments, capital, and money movement for people who've never had proper access to any of it. The work is specific, grounded, and occasionally humbling. I like it for exactly those reasons.

Outside of work I write for Oblique Asia — slow analysis of Southeast Asia's startup and tech ecosystem. Not takes. Not trends. The structural forces underneath the surface that most coverage misses.

I read more than I produce. I think most marketing content, including a lot of what I've made, is noise. I'm trying to make less of it, and make what I do make count.

Based in Manila. Cat dad of two. Interested in money, meaning, and why some things last.

Now

The work I'm doing today.

  1. PayMongo (YC S19)

Head of Marketing & Communications Jul 2024 — Present Manila

Leading marketing for a fintech building real financial infrastructure for Filipino businesses — payments, wallet, capital, money movement. The mandate goes beyond campaigns: shaping how the market understands and trusts us as we evolve from startup to financial backbone.

    • Relaunched PayMongo with a full in-house rebrand. Elevated brand perception and saved millions in agency costs by building creative capacity in-house.
    • Shipped a new web and product marketing layer that does justice to the current product suite — Payments, Wallet, Capital, Money Movement.
    • Broke down silos between product, growth, sales, and ops so the company tells one coherent story.
    • Built a lean marketing team where creativity and ownership matter as much as KPIs. Aligned messaging architecture across SME and enterprise segments.
    • Enabled strategic partnerships with Lazada, ShopeePay, and GoTyme. Shifted perception from 'payment gateway' to 'financial infrastructure player.'
  2. Oblique Asia

Founder & Editor in Chief Jul 2025 — Present Side project

Slow analysis of Southeast Asia's startup and tech ecosystem. Not takes. Not trends. The structural forces underneath the surface that most coverage misses.

    • Curated publication on startups, technology, and culture, blending sharp commentary with SEO-driven content strategy.
    • Built a brand voice designed to feel premium, contrarian, and conversation-worthy — for intermediate-to-senior operators in startups, scale-ups, and enterprises.
    • Reaching thousands of readers; shaping a dialogue around what next-generation Asian business storytelling should look like.
  3. Komorebi

    Co-founder Apr 2026 — Present Panglao, Bohol

A coffee space in Panglao. A slow room kept for people who care about the craft.
